  1. Interim Online Review 09/11/10

    Hey Sean

Not a huge amount on here at the halfway stage... do I need to worry? The IOR is only truly useful if there is lots to look at and reflect on. Try and be more organised/productive in the future, as this is really an opportunity missed. That said, what I can see is that you haven't done much to address your visual concept - yes, you've got influence maps - but remember a big part of this brief positions you, not simply as the concept artist, but as the production designer too. In this sense, you need to identify certain visual principles, rules and systems of metaphor by which to approach the design and execution of these spaces. In order to do this effectively, you've got dig more deeply into the source material, its author, its context etc. You're looking for an idea you can turn into a system for colour values, shape, style and overall aesthetic. You might want to think about the intended audience for the cg adaptation of the book - is it for a younger audience? If so, does your style need to be more 'toony' - or is it Tim Burton-esque, so that it should borrow from German Expressionism? What is your aesthetic? What does your version of this book look like - and why? This 'why?' question is the one I'll be asking at the crit. What you don't want to do is generate generic illustrations of the descriptions in the book. You're in charge of an entire world here...

  2. Re. your reviews, I want students to treat them as opportunities to refine their essay technique. So, I'd like you to consider the tone of your reviews, which, at the moment, are rather chatty and conversational; they read as if you're talking to me. I'd like you to treat them more formally, in terms of style, and therefore take notice of the advice re. assignments etc. I give below.

Here is a list of links back to the CGAA Group Blog, where I have recently uploaded loads of information regarding the way I want students to tackle their written assignments. As you now prepare your unit 2 assignments on production design, pay close attention to the advice given. I will be looking for clear improvement in terms of use of language, academic ‘voice’, use of conventions, argument structure and correct methods of referencing.

Also – be sure to check out the 2 student essays uploaded to myUCA/Space/Unit Materials – good examples of degree level written assignments. Take the time to read them.
